In the tradition of the Roman Caesars, the Emperor of the French Napoleon Ist had an Arc de Triomphe built at the top of Avenue des Champs-Elysees in honor of his Grand Army. We were in 1806 and the Napoleonic armies had just experienced their greatest victory under the sun of Austerlitz.
Completed in the reign of Louis-Philippe, the Arc de Triomphe in Paris established itself as a privileged place for official ceremonies, notably the commemorations of May 8 and November 11, when people gathered at the tomb of Unknown soldier who shelters the Arc.
In addition to the gigantism of the monument and the beauty of its bas-reliefs, the roof of the Arc de Triomphe offers a sensational panorama of the capital, in the heart of Paris.
